| | Fundamentals Skills Camp Format This is a flexible format for a basketball skills camp, e.g. a one-week day camp, then make adjustments for half-day, evening or other camps. Typically players are divided by gender and/or age, each group with its own gym and coaches. The emphasis is on individual fundamentals (see Skills Checklist for Youth Players) but team tactics can be covered. Use the "TLC" approach to drills - teaching, learning, and especially competing. Daily Themes Daily schedules will have common blocks, e.g. warm-up, stationary ballhandling, shooting, 5 on 5, but camps can also have daily themes, e.g., - In Switzerland, from Monday to Thursday we ran individual skills competitions such as dribbling races and speed layups (see below), with an overall winner at the end of the week (along with awards for MVP, Most-Improved Player, and Best Attitude).
- Emphasize different skills each day, e.g. dribbling, passing, layups, shooting. The Ashbury College Community Program is held on Fridays for 7 weeks, weekly skill sessions cover dribbling, passing, shooting, post play, 1-on-1/on-ball defence, and transition (there were 8 weeks one year, adding 3 on 3 concepts). Competitions are held on the last day of camp.
- Cover team tactics with a TLC progression from 1-on-1 to 2-on-2 to 3-on-3 (and optionally 4-on-4, 5-on-5 concepts), with new skills and concepts at each stage, e.g. drive and kick on offence, help and recover on defence. See
Drills and Competitions See Favourite drills for Kids, which includes links to Gooroo Youth drills (for U11 to U14, and older) and Jr. NBA drills, which also cover U7 to U10 (see the Rookie Level).
