Fast break Six cycles
| 1 Ian MacKinnon
Make 6 layups on 6 trips (5 goes twice), progression - each player takes a perimeter shot (5 trips).
Score on every trip, put back any miss. 4 always inbounds, wings 2 and 3 cross. Players start in the lane, 4 (or coach) scores the ball.
Space properly on dribble penetration and post-entry passes.
Two teams can compete, going cross-court at the same time. (Progression - do the cycle in random order, read the play, e.g. what the point guard does) (Variations) - the shooter can't rebound - every player has to get both feet in the paint on each trip - no putbacks, outlet on a miss |
| 2 1) Six-cycle layups
Make 6 layups in 45 (or 40) seconds, the shooting order is 1-2-3-4-5-5. Optionally add 5 seconds for each miss.
a)
Trip one - 4 inbounds to 1 who dribbles fullcourt for a layup.
Variation - 1 headmans to 2, 5 UCLA screens for 1 who cuts for a return pass and finishes.
For a perimeter shot, 1 bumps and fades, see below.
Ettore Messina - 4 ballscreens if he arrives and the action has not yet happened. |
| 3 b)
Trip two - 1 headmans to 2 who finishes.
Messina - 3-on-3 is a fast break situation because so much space is available. |
| 4 c)
Trip three - 1 headmans to 3 who finishes. |
| 5 d)
Trip four - 1 headmans to 2 for a cross-court skip pass to 3, who hits 4 diving to the basket.
(Variations)
- with younger players, just reverse the ball to 3 - 1 passes to 2, 5 diagonal backscreens for 4 - 1 passes to 2, gets a return pass and skip passes to 3 - 1 passes to 2 who skip passes to 4, who passes to 3.
Larry Brown - get the ball to the baseline to flatten the defence, across to the other side, then inside.
Messina - the cut by 5 causes the defence to collapse, making ball reversal to a shooter easier by skip pass or through the point guard.
See Fast break - Tennessee 4 on 0, 5 on 0. |
| 6 e)
Trip five - 1 headmans to 2 who makes a post feed to 5. |
| 7 f)
Trip six - 1 headmans to 5 on a rim run.
Variation - 1 headmans to 2 who skips it to 3, 5 seals for a pass inside.
|
| 8 2) Five-cycle shots
Each player takes a perimeter shot, subtract five seconds for each make. Bob Hurley - Niagara drill - 5 trips, 1-2-3-4-5 shoot jump shots, score every trip, make 3 out of 5 jumpers. a) 1 headmans to 2 who drives baseline and makes a drift pass to 3 for a shot. |
| 9 b)
Coming back, 1 headmans to 3 who drives baseline and kicks to 2. |
| 10 c)
1 passes to 2 who drives and kicks to 5 spacing on the drive.
|
| 11 d)
1 headmans to 2 who skip passes to 3 who drives and kicks to 4 who dives or trails then spaces on the drive. |
| 12 e)
1 headmans to 2, 5 UCLA screens, 1 bumps and fades for a catch and shoot.
Variation - 1 dribbles fullcourt for a pull-up jump shot.
