Scrimmage - Ideas

General

  • Substitute a defender when their check scores.
  • Regular scoring (2s and 3s) plus 1 point for each offensive rebound.
  • To emphasize attacking the basket, only one point for any make.
  • Play to 7 baskets but a turnover is minus 1 (Flip Saunders).
  • Play to 6 then next basket wins (Don Kelbick).
  • Win by two baskets (Hoop Tactics).
  • There are no fouls unless the head coach calls it (Larry Shyatt).
  • Defence ball rule - defenders get possession any time they deflect a ball out of bounds (Mads Olesen).
  • One-second game - attackers have one second to shoot, pass, or drive to create a pass or shot (Brian McCormick).
    • George Karl - shoot, pass or attack within 3 seconds.
    • San Antonio Spurs - you can't have the ball for more than one second.
  • One point if a help defender takes a charge, and no foul called if he's late and hammers the guy, give it up if help comes (Dave Smart).
  • After a score, offence can rebound and score again (Brian McCormick).
  • Validate a win - a player who scores a winning basket must make a free throw to win the game,
    • on a miss his team keeps possession and the score goes back to what it was before the basket (Dave Severns)
    • take the free throw with rebounders, it's live on a miss, if a team misses two free throws they lose the game (Bob Hurley)
    • on a miss his team doesn't get the win, and they do five push-ups (Vance Walberg).
  • Losers run two up-and-backs, a player on the winning team must make two free throws or his team runs one up and back (Ian MacKinnon).
  • Losers run up and back in 10 seconds (Vance Walberg).
  • A player on the losing team has to make two free throws or his team runs (Gregg Popovich).
  • Drill punishment - stop scrimmage, the team or group being punished runs two up-and-backs under 19 seconds then gets right back in with no break (Dave Smart).up

Halfcourt

  • Five possessions each,
    • regular scoring
    • the defence gets two points if the offence does not get off a shot, one point for a defensive rebound, no points if they foul or the offence scores (Dean Smith).
  • Make it, take it (offensive Cut-throat).
  • Defence gets a point for a stop and stays on defence, offence scores to get on defence (Halfcourt stops).
  • Defence wins on 3 stops in a row (kills, defensive Cut-throat).
  • No or limited dribbling (Cutters).
  • No cutting (promote dribble penetration).
  • To promote spacing and drive and kick, all catches must be outside the 3-point line (Mike MacKay).
    • 3s or layups (3 on 3 kick-out)
    • Brian McCormick - also allow catches on a direct cut to the basket.
  • All attackers must take two dribbles before they can pass or shoot (Greg Kampe).
  • Live on a post entry (Kampe).
  • Live on a post entry and pass back out (Ettore Messina).
  • 3 on 3 plus coach as a help defender protecting the basket.
  • Live when the shot clock gets down to 8 (Calipari, Kirby Schepp).up

Fullcourt

  • Pistons scrimmages
    • Play up and down until one team scores, defend against a set offence and transition.
    • Start at one basket (half-court set or inbounds), go up and back (three plays total), rotate teams, play to 7 baskets.
      • Variation - 5 possessions.
    • Run out of bounds plays.
    • Play a two-minute game, simulate score (e.g., stealing or fouling if behind).
    • Run plays after a made or missed free throw.
    • Offence goes upcourt 5 on 0 (free lance, run a play, or press break), comes back 5 on 5 against defence, play to a stop or score, then the defence goes 5 on 0 upcourt and 5 on 5 back.
      • Progression - 5 on 0 upcourt to 5 on 5 coming back to 5 on 5 in transition after a stop or score.
  • 5 on 5 transition
    • Everything is a miss (outlet on a make), and any ball out of bounds goes to the defence.
      • Use a 12- or 16-second shot clock (George Karl).
      • If coach calls "turnover" (bad offence), put the ball down and get back on defence (Chris Oliver).
      • Any outlet (or inbound) pass below the foul-line extended, or to a player running back to the ball, is a turnover (John Leonzo).
      • The ball must cross halfcourt in the first 5 seconds of the shot clock (Leonzo).
      • The ball must be dribbled across halfcourt (hockey rules, work on trapping).
      • One day the ball has to cross halfcourt on the dribble, the next day on the pass (Greg Kampe).
      • Position-less transition (Coach Mac) - any defender who gets possession in the backcourt (a rebound, steal or inbounds pass) must dribble across halfcourt before they can pass.
        • Variation - allow an advance pass to the frontcourt, but not a pass to a teammate in the backcourt unless double-teamed.
      • One team is losing and crashes the offensive boards, the other team has safeties and gets back in transition.
      • The points you get for a make is the time left on the shot clock, play to 100 (Leonzo).
  • For a basket to count, it has to be followed by a stop (Score-stop).
  • Start play with coach shooting (e.g. Tar heels), a half-court set (Enfield), or ball out of bounds (Dead-ball presses), play to a dead ball (or up and back), re-start.
  • No basket unless all five attackers get across halfcourt, and the offence keeps the ball if all five defenders don't cross halfcourt (Steve Alford).
  • Halfcourt reps back and forth - halfcourt attack to a stop or score, outlet to coach, transition to the other basket, get organized, coach passes to the team in possession, option - make-it take-it (Chris Oliver).up
