Fundamentals - Skills Checklist for Novice Players

Movement skills

  • stop, start, and change direction efficiently (agility)
  • running (forward, backward), sliding, skipping, jumping, bounding, squatting, lunging, turning, twisting, lateral movement

Footwork

  • ready position (athletic stance)
  • jump (quick) stop
  • forward and reverse pivot, a) permanent pivot foot, b) either foot
  • change of direction - a) v-cut, b) spin
  • getting open - a) face cut, backcut, b) v-cut, c) blast cut
  • catching the ball - hop to a jump stop

Triple threat

  • square up, ball in pocket
  • protect the ball - sweep (low), rip (high), space pivot
  • blast, crossover step

Dribbling

  • stationary ballhandling and dribbling
  • speed dribble - dominant hand, weak hand
  • control (crab) dribble
  • pullback dribble, pullback crossover, lateral (escape) dribble
  • primary moves - a) change of speed, stop and go, b) stutter, inside-out
  • secondary moves (change of direction) - a) crossover, b) reverse

Layups

  • right-hand layup (right-foot left-foot finish)
  • left-hand layup (left-right finish)
  • give and go, backdoor cut
  • primary move, secondary move

Shooting

  • BEEEF - balance, eyes, elbow, extension, follow-through
  • spot-up, on the move, off the dribble - hop to a jump stop

Passing

  • chest, bounce, push
  • stationary (triple threat), on the move, off the dribble
  • receiving - show both hands, meet the pass, catch with both hands, jump stop

Defending

  • on the ball (ball-you-basket) - close-out, trace the ball, stance, slide, "dead", contest a shot ("shot"), box out
  • jump to the ball (give and go)
  • off the ball - ball-you-man, see ball and man (point pistols), below the ball
  • help and recover on dribble penetration
  • get back on defence (transition)

Offensive tactics

  • spacing and floor balance
  • basket cut (give and go), exit cut, fill cut
  • backdoor cut
  • dribble hand-off
  • fast break - rebound, break-out (run hard), fill the lanesup
