Fast break - Ashbury Break 4

sketch
1
Ballscreen with 4, e.g. if X4 is a bad screen defender. Early ballscreens are also denial counters.

- Swing (Power option), also Slice (12)
- Quick
- Florida pistol down
- Shake (Flex, Heat options)
- Flex (X)

See Fast breaks - Ashbury break, Ashbury break 5.

Dave Smart - Carleton ballscreens the other team's best perimeter scorer to beat him up, and screens with the attacker guarded by the worst ballscreen defender (the opposing big) to get him away from the basket. However, late in the game they use their two best attackers.

1) Swing (ball reversal)

1 passes to 4 (who can v-cut to get open), 5 ducks in then keeps going, 3 blast cuts for a pass from 4, 1 screens away for matchup 2, 4 picks and rolls or pops.

If X3 sags to avoid being screened, 4 can turn to pin screen, 3 shoots behind the screen or attacks opposite when X3 recovers.

3 backcuts if denied, or 4 uses a dribble-at for a handoff or backcut.up

Power option

5 ducks in then backscreens for 4.

Variation - 5 moves across the lane then cross-screens for the roller on a pass to 2.

2) Slice

Instead of a ballscreen, stagger screen for a shooter.

4 passes to 3 and stagger screens with 1, 5 sees it and flex screens for 2, 1 and 2 go opposite, if 2 uses the stagger, 1 uses the flex screen.

Triple option - 3 passes to 2 and runs off a 1-5-4 triple screen for a pass, 1 runs off 5 and 4, if 3 doesn't have a shot, he can take one dribble to the middle and throw back to 1.

For a progression, see Tactics - Lawrence Frank ballscreens (Slice).up

3) Quick (wing entry)

1 passes to ballside 3 and basket cuts, 4 ballscreens.

Option - if the ball is swung to 1 in the corner, 2 clears and 5 ballscreens.

Progression - 1 can cut to the ballside corner, 4 picks and rolls, 1 fills behind the ballscreen.

If 3 gets a dribble handoff, 1 clears (or pops), 4 ballscreens (it can be an area screen), and rolls if 1 pops..

1 can butt screen for 3 on the handoff.

Option - 5 comes up to stagger ballscreen with 4.

Special - 3 throws back to 1 and clears, 4 ballscreens for 1.up

5) Shake

Another denial counter.

4 circles under the ball to pick and roll or pop.

If  throws back to 4 popping, can pass to 3 and ballscreen, or dribble hand-off.

3 fills behind if 4 rolls (X3 can help on the roll).

Option - 3 clears out to give 4 space.

Flex option

5 crosses the lane and screens for 3, who flex cuts then gets back out the same side. 4 picks and pops.

Post-rub option - 3 starts to go back out below 5 then tight curls, 4 gets a throwback from 1 and looks for 5 inside, see Offence - Xavier middle ballscreens (Post rub), Quick hitter - Cornell ballscreen.

sketch
9
Heat option

3 moves in as 1 uses the ballscreen, then cross-screens for 5 on a throwback to 4.

Variation - 2 runs the baseline using 5 and 3, then 3 cross-screens for 5.

See Xavier middle ballscreens (Heat, Stagger 4).up

6) Flex (X)

3 flex cuts using 5.

Can be used against denial.

Option - if defenders switch on the flex cut, 5 seals X3, or 3 keeps going, 1 passes to 4 who dribbles to the wing looking to feed 5 posting a mismatch.

See Tactics (Using screens) for flex-cut reads.

5 re-screens for 3, 4 can pass to 3 and follow to ballscreen (5 crosses the lane), or use a dribble-at.

Option - 3 can tight curl the re-screen.

To run Flex for 2, 1 passes to 4, 5 crosses the lane to flex screen, then re-screens, for a progression see Offence - Flex specials (Xavier).up
