Fast break - Ashbury Break
| 1 - Skip, fist (slip), Cougar (throwback) - 4-flip, Eagle - Denial - dribble clear, backcut, backscreen, ballscreen
1) Basic entry
1 passes to 2, backscreens for 4 then clears high weakside (for an easy reversal pass). |
| 2 2 looks for 5 and passes to 4, who looks for a high-low pass to 5.
A skip pass to 3 is an attack situation, 5 follows the pass, 4 dives weakside.
If 4 passes back to 2, 5 steps out to create an easy pass.
4 backcuts if denied, see below. |
| 3 If 3 drives baseline, 1 fills behind, 2 drifts to the weakside corner, 4 goes to the dots, 5 i-cuts to the elbow.
On a middle drive, 4 and 5 would get their butts to the baseline, 1 fill behind, and 2 spot up weakside. |
| 4 2) Cross
1 passes to 2, basket cuts, cross-screens for 5 then keeps going into high-low.
|
| 5 4 picks and rolls if the ball is swung to 3 (Utah screen), 1 fills behind.
Fist slip - 4 slips, 5 sprints to ballscreen.
Option - 1 clears to the other side, giving space for 4 to pop. |
| 6 If 4 uses a dribble-at, a) 3 gets a handoff if he is the matchup, or b) if 1 is the matchup, 3 backcuts and clears, 4 hands off to 1 and rolls or pops (shown). 5 posts on a throwback to 4. Cougar option (shown) - 5 and 2 stagger screen for 3, see Offence - 1-4 Dive series. Specials - 4-flip - 4 hands off to 1 and pops, 5 picks and rolls, see Offence - Xavier middle ballscreens (4-out weave) - Eagle - 3 cross-screens for 5, 4 downscreens for 3, see 1-4 Dive series. |
| 7 Into high-low when 3 finishes the swing to 2.
Variation - 3 downscreens for 4 then clears to the matchup spot, see Offence - Greenberg Slice. |
| 8 On a low-post entry, 2 relocates along the perimeter, 4 dives weakside to the basket, 3 gets to 90 degrees above the ball, 1 gets to 45 degrees on the weakside. |
| 9 3) Swing
1 passes to 4, who passes to 3 and follows to pick and roll, or uses a dribble handoff (shown), 5 relocates (optionally 5 relocates high weakside then dives).
|
| 10 If 1 finishes the swing to 2 and cuts to the matchup spot, 4 comes high. |
| 11 4 looks for a high-low pass to 5. |
| 12 4) High-low denial
If 2 has no pass, 4 backcuts when 2 takes one dribble at X4, or he just steps out then backcuts. 5 exit cuts to the short corner, creating space. 3 fills the top. Other options - 4 ballscreens for 2 - 4 downscreens for 5 - 5 backscreens for 4 (see below), 4 can then backscreen for 5, 2 looks to drive baseline on a backscreen. See Offences - Nets, Greenberg Slice. |
| 13 2 passes to 3, who looks inside for 4 and 5 then swings the ball to 1 and spaces away, 4 cross-screens for 5 who picks and rolls.
See Offence - Florida ballscreen (Disguise).
|
| 14 5) Dive the big
If 4 is the first big in transition, he can backscreen to get 5 inside.
If 4 trails but has a matchup in the low post, 5 can backscreen to help post the trailer, or 4 can just dive to the ballside low post and 5 comes high, or the posts can x-cut on ball reversal (see Offence - High-low). |
| 15 6) Dribble-cross (denial)
1 dribble clears 2, who is overplayed, 2 cross-screens for 5, 1 and 2 exchange roles. Variation - 2 backcuts on denial. Against pressure (denial) defence, use backdoor cuts, early screening, and dribble entry (also good spacing, get the ball inside to 5, and drive the basket). For ballscreen counters to denial, see Ashbury break 4 - Florida pistol down - Shake - Flex (X) Ashbury break 5 - Dive - Ravens pistol down - Suns - Fist (and Spread) - Gator - Boston (L-screen) Shake, Suns, Dive and Florida can be used against zone defence, see Zone set plays - Ashbury. |
