Offence Break 2
| 1 Ian MacKinnon
Break exploits offensive match-ups on the perimeter and inside (with 5). The corner is the perimeter match-up spot. Get into high-low continuity after the initial action, see Offence - High-low basics.
With Break 2, there is a UCLA screen then flex screen on a wing-entry pass to either side. Also see Break 1 and Break 3.
1) Pass to ballside wing
1 passes to 2 and UCLA cuts using 5, 4 dives, 3 spaces high.
If 2 is denied, 5 backscreens then re-screens to bring him out to the wing, see Break 1.
(Variation - 1 dribble pushes 2 down to the block, exchanging places) |
| 2 When 2 passes to 5 stepping out top, 1 flex cuts to the corner using 4 (1 waits for the pass to 5).
2 could pass to 5 at the elbow and cut for a hand-back, 5 has the option of attacking the basket.
Special - 1 screens across for 4 then 3 downscreens for 1. Kelbick (Basic set) and Larry Brown (UCLA duck-in) - 2 passes to 5 and downscreens for 1, 4 ducks in. |
| 3 If the ball is swung, 1 meets the pass, 5 dives, 3 spaces weakside, 4 ballscreens.
|
| 4 If 5 skip passes, 1 can
a) shoot or attack the basket (it's a close-out situation),
|
| 5 or b) dribble off the baseline to set up a ballscreen by 4.
|
| 6 If the ball is reversed to 2, 1 and 3 space weakside and 4 comes high into high-low.
3 would cut to the weakside corner if he is the perimeter match-up.
Don't run a hand-off from high-low, the ballside block is occupied.
|
| 7 2) Ball reversal
The ball is reversed to 3, 4 UCLA cuts using 5, 1 dives.
Hubie Brown Triangle offence - 2 flex cuts using 5 then backscreens for 4.
Denial options
- 5 backscreens-rescreens if 3 is denied - or 4 dribble pushes 3 to the block, exchanging positions - run Dive if 4 is denied.
See Break 1.
|
| 8 3 passes to 5, 4 curls a flex screen from 1, who then clears to the corner.
|
| 9 Get into high-low on ball reversal to 1, inside match-up 5 goes to the low post.
|
| 10 3) Pinch post denial option
5 flashes to the high post for a pass, 4 dives and flex screens, 1 dives looking for a hand-back then uses the flex screen.
Option - 5 and 2 start in an inverted stack with 2 on the block (or 5 downscreens for 2), 2 breaks to the wing, 5 flashes high whether or not there is a pass to 2.
Variation - 2 backcuts and is replaced by 1.
See Offence - 1-4 Dives series (Blue entry).
