Offence Break 1
| 1 Ian MacKinnon
Break exploits offensive match-ups on the perimeter and inside (with 5). The corner is the perimeter match-up spot. Get into high-low continuity after the initial action, see Offence - High-low basics
With Break 1, trailer 4 ballscreens on a wing-entry pass to either side. Also see Break 2 and Break 3.
1) Ball reversal
1 passes to 4 and exchanges with 2 (except if 1 is the perimeter match-up), 4 passes to 3 and follows to pick and roll, 5 comes high weakside.
Get the perimeter match-up to the weakside top on the ballscreen so he can get to the match-up spot on ball reversal.
(Variation - 1 screens away for 2, 4 can ballscreen for 3 or stagger screen with 1) |
| 2 If the ball is reversed to 1, get into high-low offence.
2 would cut to the weakside corner if he is the perimeter match-up.
|
| 3 2) Pass to ballside wing
1 passes to the ballside wing and cuts opposite to the corner (or pushes 3 to the corner if 1 is the match-up), 4 follows to pick and roll, 5 comes high.
1 can dribble at 2 for a dribble exchange, 4 ballscreens on a hand-off (pistol down), see denial options below.
See Fast breaks - Florida 2006 and Versoix (Quick). Tennessee playbook, play call #4 - 1 dribble exchanges with 2, ballside 5 backscreens for 1, 2 passes to 4 |
| 4 If defenders switch on the ballscreen, 2 pulls the dribble back out to the wing and 5 gets to high-low, or go 1-4 low if 2 has a mismatch against X4.
See Tactics - Using sidescreens (Dave Smart).
|
| 5 3) Options
a) Power
4 picks and pops, 5 crosses the lane to flex screen for 4, who flex cuts on a pass from 3 to 2.
Option - against a switching defence, 1 dives and screens for 4.
Argentina flex ballscreen - 5 flex screens for 2, who then backscreens for 4.
|
| 6 b) Flarescreen
4 ballscreens for 3 then flarescreens on a pass to 2.
|
| 7 c) Slip
A read (X4 hard hedges), or random. 4 slips a ballscreen, 5 comes high then ballscreens.
|
| 8 d) Double slip
A call. 4 comes back out high after slipping a ballscreen, 5 also slips a ballscreen and goes low to get into high-low.
|
| 9 e) Little-to-big ballscreen
3 and 4 exchange positions to start, 3 ballscreens for 4.
If defenders switch, 4 looks to pass then post inside.
Variation - from a regular set 4 dribble clears 3 then 1 ballscreens for 4, see Denials below.
|
| 10 4) Denial options
4 is denied.
a) Dive
1 dribbles at X4, 4 backcuts (dives), 1 passes to 3 and spaces away (or exchanges with 2), 5 ballscreens.
Option - 4 can just backcut on his own if denied.
See Slip above, and Double slip.
Variation - Dive-post - 4 dives and posts up, 5 comes high then ballscreens if 3 does not pass.
|
| 11 3 is denied.
a) Backcut
3 backcuts (the post is open) and comes back to the wing if there is no pass.
|
| 12 b) Dribble-at
4 dribbles at X3 for a hand-off to 3 if X3 sags off to defend a backcut, otherwise 3 backcuts.
|
| 13 c) Dribble-at ballscreen (special)
4 dribbles at X3, 3 backcuts and clears, then 1 ballscreens for 4, see Little-to-big ballscreen above.
|
| 14 2 is denied.
a) Backscreen-rescreen
2 is denied, 5 backscreens then re-screens.
Option - 2 just cuts to the block, 5 forward pivots to screen for 2 coming back out to the wing.
|
| 15 b) Dribble-clear
2 is denied, 1 dribbles at X2, 2 clears weakside, 4 ballscreens for 1 (2 and 1 exchange roles).
|
| 16 c) Dribble hand-off
1 hands off to 2 and clears, 4 ballscreens for 2 (see pistol down, above).
|
| 17 Option - after the hand-off the ball is reversed from 2 to 4 to 3 and 4 follows his pass to ballscreen for 3 (1 fills behind the ballscreen).
|
| 18 d) Dribble-loop
2 is denied, 1 dribbles at him, 2 loops up to the guard spot using 5 (zipper cut).
For zipper reads, see Horns - Zipper, Zipper fist.
|
| 19 On a pass to 2, look to swing it to 3 for a ballscreen.
