1-2-2 match-up situations
2-1-2

sketch

See 1-2-2 vs Duke runner (high post), 4-out 1-in.

a)

The high post is not considered a major threat.

With X1 on the ball, the defence has a 1-2-2 shape, X3 covers the high post but guards 4, X4 takes 5 but stays low. X2 has 2, X5 has 3.

These are the matchups for the possession.

Variation - X2 picks up the ball on the left, X1 covers and stays with the high post, X4 takes 2. Use this if X1 has length.

See Defence - 3-2 Raptors.

If 1 passes to 2, X2 closes out, X4 defends 5 diving from the high post, X1 covers the high post.

X2 takes away baseline, X4 can front from the top (or play behind).

4
If 1 passes to 4, X3 closes out, X1 drops to cover the high post, X4 still has 5 and comes ballside, X2 sinks.

sketch

X5 closes out on a pass to 3, X4 can guard 5 diving to the low post.

With X1 covering the high post, X3 can deny a return pass to 4.

X2 is the help on the low post.

Jim Foster - X3 can deny (facing the ball), plug (gap), or trap.

b)

The high post is considered a threat, so X4 comes up to guard 5 with X1 on the ball, or comes up at least part way.

This puts X4 in good position to contest in the high post and on a dive to the low post.

Hoop Tactics - X5 takes and stays with 5.

On a pass to 2, X4 contests 5 diving from the high post.

sketch
9
On a pass to 4, X1 drops to help cover the high post.
