Press breaks
Halfcourt Atkins

Ken Atkins

Against an odd-front halfcourt zone press.

Ballside 3 is on the wing, weakside 4 is on the block. On the pass from 1 to 2, 4 pops out to the wing, 3 goes to the block.

Billy Donovan - against a halfcourt trap, always change sides of the floor before the halfcourt line.

(2 can pass back to 1 if needed, behind ball level, see Press break - Canada Basketball halfcourt).

(Variation) - 4 trails, or bumps 5 from the middle, see Press break - Ashbury halfcourt.

On a pass to the high post, 5 looks for 3 low, 1, and 4 sliding toward the baseline.

Michael Lynch - on a pass to 5, spot up if a shooter, otherwise cut to the rim.

See Zone offence - 2-1-2.

If 2 passes to 4, the options are

a) 3 runs the baseline and 5 stays at the high post.

4 looks for 5 at the high post, 3 on the baseline, a skip pass to 1, or back to 2.

5 cuts to the basket on a pass to 3, who also looks for 1 spotting up weakside.

or

b) 5 dives on the pass to 4 (and can then drift to the baseline), 3 fills the high post.

Ashbury halfcourt - 5 dives, 3 stays weakside.

(Option) - 5 dives, 1 cuts to the ballside elbow, see Zone offence - 2-1-2.

Use a 1-3-1 set if the defence is trapping the two-guard set, or against an even-front zone. 4 runs the baseline, post movement options are the same when the ball goes to a wing.

Park View High - shift into a 1-3-1 set against an even-front zone (5 stays middle).

Duke vs. halfcourt 2-1-2 - use three guards in the backcourt for ball reversal, 4 is in the middle (bumping down 5).

See Press break - Middle, Zone offence - Kermit Davis vs 1-3-1.
