New Jersey Nets (2006)

After a make by the other team.

Rub Set

5 is at the mid-post, between the ball and the basket (line of the ball). If 5 catches the ball with two feet in the paint, he looks to score. He re-posts on a pass back out to 1.

On a pass to 5, 1 can go cut (baseline), basket cut (middle), or screen away for 4. Or 1 can fake a play to 3 in the corner and pass to 5 who hits 3 on a backcut.

Another option is that 4 dives on the pass to 5.

If X1 digs (helps) on the pass to the post, 4 can screen the help for 1.

2
3 rub (flex) cuts as the pass to 4 is in the air. Every cut is a scoring opportunity, cut to be free, don't cut to be guarded. There is no such thing as running a play, only your defender knows what the play is, it's whatever he tells you to do. 3 and 5 read the defence:

- if X3 bodies 3 (usually forcing high), 3 takes him one way and goes the other looking for a direct pass
- if 3 goes low and X3 stays attached (chases), 5 ducks into the dots
- if X3 goes under the screen, 3 goes over to the dots
- if X3 cheats over the top, 5 pivots to screen in, 3 bumps back
- if X3 goes low and X5 bumps the cutter high, 5 spins to the basket for a lob pass (if athletic), or bumps back to the short corner
- if X5 sags off 5 (worried about 3), 3 screens X5 and 5 bumps back.

Power option (get the ball into the paint)

2 looks for 3 for a count and a half. On a pass back to 4, 5 screens for 3, who goes low, then 5 ducks in the middle.

If 4 passes to 1, 1 looks for 3.

sketch
4
Cross option

3 cross-screens for 5, 4 walks his defender down then pins down for 3.

Option - 5 can cut up top using 4.

sketch
5
Cross-fist - on a pass to 3 out top, 4 comes back to ballscreen as the ball is in the air, 1 and 2 go down to the corners, 5 replaces if 4 rolls.

sketch
6
Cross-get

5 ballscreens, 4 works the weak box, 3 comes out to the slot.

sketch
7
Rip (backscreen)

Called on the run. If X4 goes lowside (not ballside), 4 takes him low and goes over the top of the screen trying to get a running post-up. 4 can go to the short corner if he can shoot. 5 slides up to the elbow, 3 goes out top.

sketch
8
5 ballscreens on a pass to 3, rolls or pops.

sketch
9
Rip-get option (Utah), if X4 goes inside the backscreen. 4 decoys the post-up, sprints into a pick and roll.

Option - 5 ducks in then screens his defender to prevent him from helping on 2's drive (shown).

sketch
10
Swing

Option - 5 screens for 4, then opens to the ball.

sketch
11
Swing and Follow

5 follows the ball, crossing the lane then going back using 3, who then goes out the other side using 4.

sketch
12
Iso

3 can loop inside or outside.

Option - 4 then sidescreens for 3 near the elbow.

sketch
13
Iso Wheel option

If there is no pass to 3, 1 dribbles middle, 5 and 4 get 2, who tries to curl tight off the stagger instead of a "Reggie Miller" cut out to the 3-point line.

sketch
14
Then 5 and 4 get 3.

sketch
15
Denials

If the swing pass to 2 is denied, 4 will pass fake to 2 then dribble hand-off with 1.

sketch
16
Then 5 and 4 get 3.

Option - 3 and 5 backscreen for 4, then 5 downscreens for 3.

sketch
17
On a pass to 3, 5 backscreens for 1 then ballscreens for 3, 4 pins down for 2 on the weakside.

sketch
18
If 4 is denied, the first thing is for him to start higher, taking his defender out and opening up the middle for 1.

Or 1 can dribble at X4 (dribble reaction), 4 takes one quick step then uses his inside hand to go backdoor off his defender's hip looking for a right-hand bounce pass.

sketch
19
1 passes to 2 and moves back toward the wing, 3 cuts using 5 and 4, 5 comes out to fill the top, 4 replaces 5 on the weakside block. From here they can run power, cross, etc.
