Defending 5 on 5 shell double down
| 1 Ian MacKinnon
Shell drill to double team the post. Attackers pass the ball, defenders allow a post entry.
Progression - go live on the post entry. |
| 2 a) Double-team from the top
On a post feed to 5, double team from the top with X1, X5 takes away baseline, X2 takes away a return pass to 2 (face guard). Here 4 dives. Variation - X5 fronts the low post, front pivots on his top (right) foot on a post entry to take away middle, the bottom of the i comes across to take away the baseline. Avery Johnson - if trapping on air time and big defender X4 is near a small nail (top) defender then X4 traps, which is more effective at stopping the ball and easier to match up on the pass out since most of the time 4 will dive on the double team. |
| 3 X3 takes the pass out of the trap, X1 goes opposite the pass and has leftovers. |
| 4 4 dives on a post feed from 3, so X1 not X4 double teams with X5. Option - always double-team from the top of the i (here X1) even if 4 stays on the post feed. |
| 5 X2 has first pass, X1 has leftovers.
On a pass out top to 1, he wants to make the extra pass to 2 unless X2 is in the passing lane. |
| 6 b) Double-team with a designated trapper
If X2 is the trapper, X1 would rotate to cover a pass back to 2. |
