Offence Elkhorn South 5-Out

5-out drive-and-space offence.
Offensive spots are action spots (slots), stretch spots (on the sidelines above the foul line, not on the 3-point line), and corners.
Hunt "9s" (big advantage layups) to get "7s" (open 3s).
Get off the rails (sidelines), drive middle.
Pass through single gaps (driving single gaps is "breaking tackles").
A 2-out passing sequence is drive, kick, swing (a one-more pass).
Cut away on a pass down (drift is another option), always stay on a pass up (e.g. corner-slot, wing-slot).
The Rose series happens on a pass across, into fingers, fan, or follow (ballscreen). Pass across early and often, it's a trigger.
Basket cut only with advantage. Are we cutting or clogging?
Tyler Coston - the Rose series is a series of corner cuts to create space.
Mark Cascio - you can't cut and drive to the rim at the same time. He wants players to play off the catch, looking for a cutter slows down ball movement.
See Offences - 5-out dribble-drive motion, 5-out dribble-attack continuity. |

| 2 1) Fingers
Fingers is a swing pass and corner cut both to the same side.
A fingers cut is a brush screen, run through the elbow with 10 fingers to the sky. It is not a shallow cut to the wing.
a) Two Side
1 is on the "two side" with 2 and 3, passes to 4 and corner cuts (a fingers cut), 4 drives behind 1, and can reverse dribble into a Barkley move.
4 can drive and kick to 3 or 2, or even corner kick to 1 after a reverse-dribble move.
1 could pass to 3 instead of 4, see Quick-swing below.
|

| 3 b) Single side
1 is on the single side, passes to 4 and corner cuts.
Here 4 drives, kicks out to 2 in the corner, goes low to read the play (2 can just shoot).
Hold if the ball is being driven at the corner. On a two-foot jump stop the ballhandler needs help, the corner can lift or burn (backcut).
A bounce-out is a protection plan, triggering an inside flare screen (or other play).
Marc Hart - the drop zone is a protection plan.
|

| 4 2 can drive and kick to 5 or 1, or pass up to 3, who passes to 5 and finger cuts.
Down-Up-Over - corner kickout, up to the slot, over to the other slot.
|

| 5 5 drives middle, kicks to 2, who can shoot or attack middle.
Hold a stretch position until the ball gets below you, then lift for a pitch-back (the corner can also lift).
|

| 6 c) Swing-quick
1-4 swing pass and fingers cut, 4 finishes the swing to 3, cuts to the opposite corner, 3 attacks middle.
Option - fingers.
|

| 7 2) Fan
1 can fingers cut or fan cut, it's not a call. Teach fingers first.
A fan cut is to the stretch spot, it's a shuffle square to the rim, not a sprint. 2 (usually) cuts up to the nail from the corner. 4 automatically boomerangs the ball to 1.
On "fan return", 1 passes back to 4 in the slot and goes to the corner.
a)
The primary option is a shot or drive by 1 (who can rip baseline).
Mark Cascio - 4 can pass, follow to ballscreen and pop to the corner.
Cascio - Drive and Space Possessions - 4 passes to 1, cuts to the corner for a return pass.
|

| 8 b) Specials
2 comes up to the nail.
|

| 9 i) Nail ballscreen
1 makes a return pass to 4 as 2 screens, 4 passes to 3 and corner cuts, 3 attacks using the screen.
|

| 10 ii) Chin screen
4 passes to 3, who swings the ball to 5, 4 cuts off 2's chin screen.
See Offence - Princeton Chin Series.
|

| 11 3) Quick Swing
1 is on the two side, passes to 3 and corner cuts opposite.
(3 does not backcut and clear.)
|

| 12 3 makes a swing pass to 4 off the dribble and corner cuts behind 1, 4 attacks behind 3 (or could swing the ball to 5).
|

| 13 4) Skip pass
a)
A wing-wing skip pass is an opportunity to attack middle, here with a kick-out to 1, who can finish the swing to 2 (shown), attack middle, shoot, or pass to 4 and fingers cut.
|

| 14 b)
Or 3 passes out and holds, into 4-1 fingers.
1 can pass to 2 or attack middle.
|

| 15 Or run 1-3 fingers.
|

| 16 c)
Here 1 skip passes and finger cuts, 3 passes to 4 and also finger cuts, 4 drives.
|

| 17 5) DHO Pinch Post
a)
1-2 DHO, 2 comes off, passes to 4 off the dribble, clears weakside, 1 goes to the elbow, 5 runs the baseline.
This can also a sideline inbounds play, 3 inbounds to 1 then clears weakside.
|

| 18 4 passes to 1 and goes over for a handback (or cuts up the middle of the lane).
Variation - 4 screens away for 3.
See Offence - Princeton Point Series. |

| 19 6) Double backcut
a)
4 and 3 backcut to change sides, 5 comes out high, 1-2 DHO.
|

| 20 2-5 swing pass and corner cut, 5-4 quick pass and corner cut, 4 attacks middle.
|

| 21 b) Pinch post option
5 cuts to the low post, 4 cuts through to the corner.
|

| 22 2-3 pass and fingers cut, 5 comes up to the pinch post for a pass.
3 can come off for a handback, cut up the lane, or screen away for 4 (shown). |
