Offence
Carleton Ravens

sketch
1
These entries into high-low offence ("Break") were used most often by the Ravens in the 2011 CIS championship, along with High.

Tyson Hinz is first big if 5 gets a defensive rebound, and is the inbounder after a made basket, but will play inside or outside on offence, even after a make.

1-2-3 are interchangeable, if 2 or 3 gets the ball they bring it up on their side, 1 goes opposite.

1) Wing entry

4-out 1-in, 5 can be ballside or weakside.

1 passes to 3, 4 (Hinz) moves to the high post, 1 spaces away into high-low.

1 can make an early advance pass and go opposite.

4 can dive to the ballside low post, 5 comes high, see below.

See Fast breaks - Ravens.

Options

a) Basic continuity

3 passes to 4 who looks for a high-low pass to 5 then the ball is swung to 2. 1 and 2 look to shoot or attack on a bad close-out (there is an open post). Get into high-low on the pass to 2, 1 spaces away, 4 and 5 move ballside.

4 could ballscreen on the pass to 2.

sketch

b)

3 passes to 4 who dribbles at 1, who backcuts and clears, then 4 dribble handoffs to 2.

This can be a counter against denial.

See Offences - 1-4 Dive series, Kowalczyk ballscreen, Quick hitters - Staggered zipper, Iverson, Seahawk.

2 throws back to 4 for a shot.

Or 2 drives and kicks.

Into high-low.

sketch
7
c)

4 ballscreens, most often an area screen off the elbow then pop to the wing, 5 comes up high weakside then dives as 3 comes off the screen.

The area screen creates space to pop to the wing.

sketch
8
Here 4 picks and rolls, ballside 5 changes sides, the ball is swung to 2, who attacks middle.

sketch
9
Wing-entry variation - 1 passes to 3 and cuts into the lane.

sketch
10
3 passes to 4 who dribble handoffs to 1 coming off a screen by 2, 1 shoots.

sketch
11
Or 4 dribble hand-offs to 3.

sketch
12
2) Ball reversal

1 passes to 4 and cuts using a screen from 5.

sketch
13
a)

4 passes to 2, 5 and 4 stagger screen for 3.

sketch
14
2 passes to 3, 5 turns to screen, 4 gets a pass from 3.

See Quick hitters - C, Pecora slash, Diagonal backscreen to stagger.

sketch
15
b)

Instead of passing to 2, 4 dribble handoffs to 3.

sketch
16
3) Dribble entry

a) Sidescreen with 5

1 dribbles down with his left hand to clear 3, reverse dribbles to his right hand, 5 picks and rolls, 1 comes off the screen and passes to 4.

1 and 3 can fake a dribble handoff.

5 could be weakside.

See Offence - Kowalczyk ballscreen (Fran Fraschilla).

sketch
17
Here 4 dribble handoffs to 1, who shoots from behind.

sketch
18
Option - 3 circles to backscreen for 5.

See Quick hitters - Maccabi Tel Aviv, Offence - San Antonio Spurs (Wedge roll - 3 fakes to screen for 5 then cuts to the lane for a pass from 1).

sketch
19
Here 1 passes to 4 who dribble handoffs to 2, who throws back to 4.

sketch
20
If 1 throws back to 3, get into high-low.

sketch
21
b) Sidescreen with 4

1 dribble clears 2, 4 ballscreens, or can slip.

See Offences - Bill Self ballscreen (Side - 4 pops for a pass and feeds 5 inside), Tom Crean (Chicago), and Fast break - Mavericks (5 can clear weakside and duck in, or stay ballside and replace as 4 rolls).

sketch
22
4) Drag ballscreen

4 circles under to pick and pop (it may be an area screen inside the 3-point line), and will re-screen if X1 goes under (1 can shoot from behind the re-screen).

Option (shown) - 3 flex cuts using 5 then clears back out.

See Quick hitters - Cornell ballscreen, also Fist cross.

a)

Here 4 drives on a throwback from 1, 5 relocates.

4 can dribble handoff to 3.

sketch
24
4 and 5 stay low when the ball goes to the top.

sketch
25
5 comes high on a pass to 3.

sketch
26
If 5 is the top player in a high-low, optionally 1 backcuts but stays on the same side, 5 rolls to the basket on a dribble handoff to 2.

Option - 2 flarescreens for 1 on the pass to 5, see below.

sketch
27
b)

If 1 comes off the drag screen and keeps going to the wing, 5 picks and rolls, 2 can backscreen for 5.

sketch
28
Here 1 passes to 4 and spaces away, 2 pops out after screening for 5. Look for a high-low pass.

Zone offence

The Ravens also used high-low against zone defence.

The trailer can dive to the ballside low post, the first big comes high.

Optionally 5 backscreens to help post the trailer.

See Fast breaks - Unicaja junior (with 5 at the high post and 4 at the low post, 5 ballscreens for 2 and rolls, 4 goes out to the 3-point line).

sketch
30
Sometimes 4 dives to set up 3-out 2-in.

Here he pops back out for a pass, 2 flarescreens for 1.

sketch
31
4 fakes a dribble handoff to 1 and turns the corner.

sketch
32
Here 1 passes to 2, 5 comes high then ballscreens, 4 initially crosses the lane to set up high-low, then gets back high weakside on the ballscreen.

sketch
33
In this case 4 ballscreens, 5 replaces weakside.

sketch
34
Here 1 dribble handoffs to 2, 5 ballscreens, 1 clears to the other side.up
