Fast breaks Schepp 5-out
| 1 Kirby Schepp Transition into 5-Out (YouTube) A Carolina break with a first big running to the rim does not flow naturally into 5-out, where bigs mostly trail the play or are at the opposite 45. Schepp plays with only one position, a primary ballhandler (point guard), everyone else can be everywhere. He does not want two players waiting for the ball, three guys have to run. 4s and 5s will get to the corners, that's OK, teach them how to play from there. He teaches bigs to rebound and push the ball, try to break the 3-point line in one or two dribbles before passing, pushing the first pass further down the floor. The #1 goal is fill the corners as fast as possible, it's a race (react to possession, sprint immediately, how much ground can you cover in the first three strides). A second person on one side will stop in the "delay spot" just over halfcourt so one defender can't guard two. If there is a three side, the middle guys cuts through (but see below). If the corners are filled early, Schepp wants the lane open to attack and corners filled to kick to, don't cross the corners. |
| 2 The first look is always early and opposite to the delay spot on the two side (the cut-off man), create a 2 on 1. Look to change sides of the floor early in transition.
5 would look to pass to 2 in the corner or attack middle (often X5 will cheat towards the sideline).
If there is no early opposite or early hit-ahead, throw it back to 1, who is stays at or slightly below ball level (here the pass changes sides of the floor).
Traditional rebound-outlet is an option (see below), the rebounder usually fills the trail spot.
When the ball is passed over halfcourt they're not running offence - space, attack, kick, one more, attack again. Alex Sarama - Two-Side Break Notes - if no pass ahead is available, a pass across changes sides of the floor. Tipton - here 2-3-5 find the nearest sideline. The delay spot is top of the three-point line extended. An early and opposite pass (by 1) can be to the two side or the single side. The rebounder fills the trail spot out top. Keep the ball hot, when the ball stops, advantage stops. |
| 3 1)
If 1 rebounds he can push it, they will probably have two players in delay spots (there are four runners).
If 1 pushes it up one side, look for an early and opposite pass.
|
| 4 Here 1 rebounds, pushes the ball outside and finishes (the middle player trails).
If early opposite is not available (the defence is wide), there is space in the middle of the floor to attack, encourage the middle push.
The ball should go where there is space. 5-out spacing is not just to shoot 3s, it is to spread the defence so we can attack the paint. There is way more space when changing sides. Tipton - if the rebounder is the point guard or another player he is comfortable with using a dribble push, he wants them to become their own outlet, with no outlet pass. |
| 5 2)
Sometimes a big will push it. With 5 in the middle of the floor, 1 gets pushed to a side, trailing the play. Here 5 passes to the two side. |
| 6 If rebounder 5 gets jammed or pressured, give it up to 1. |
| 7 3) Rebound-outlet
On a defensive rebound, 1 gets open for a direct outlet pass, starts to push it up the sideline, passes early to the two side.
Other options include
- keep pushing up the sideline - pass up the sideline - return pass to the rebounder. |
| 8 4) Three side
The rebounder outlets to 1, there is a three side on the other side, this happens naturally.
If the middle guy cuts through it will create big advantages for the other two guys. Here the low guy cuts (another option is the worst shooter). Tipton - Two-Sided Break - when there are three players on the same sideline, the middle player will cut on the 45. |
| 9 A three side can be ballside.
The rebounder starts to push, passes to 1, there's a three side, the middle guy cuts through, which creates an opening for a pass up the sideline. |
| 10 Here the rebounder pushes outside, the point guard goes opposite and gets a cross-court pass, which creates a three side. To drill the two-side break, see Fast break - Schepp 3 on 2, Transition - Schepp (Maverick drill), also a 5 on 5 shell drill: - 5 on 5 shell (move the ball), offence shoots when coach puts a hand up, defensive rebound, 5 on 0 upcourt, back to 5 on 0 - 5 on 5 shell to 5 on 2 back to 5 on 5. |
