Defending Woodley 1 on 1 from ballscreen
| 1 Matt Woodley
Out of their pack-line defence (no baseline). Always go over the top of middle and step-up ballscreens. "Black" means switch all dribble hand-offs and ballscreen (use black in all 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 in practice).
For no-middle (pressure) defence, see Defence - Woodley ballscreens, Defending - Woodley 2 on 2 ballscreens (go under most of the time).
1)
3 is the attacker, X3 the defender.
a)
X3 is in the gap, closer to the ball than his man, in a closed stance. 5 screens for 1 who comes off, X1 goes over (always), 5 rolls, X3 tags the roller (with one hand), 3 comes up. |
| 2 1 passes to 3, X3 closes out, it's live 1-on-1, two dribbles, everybody else gets out of the way.
Close out with one hand up, one hand down, not two hands up in the air, you're going to get beat in a straight line. |
| 3 Progression - 5 picks and pops. |
| 4 1 passes to 5, X3 stunts at him, 5 passes to 3, X3 closes out, it's live (no baseline drive). |
| 5 b)
5 sets a step-screen, 1 comes off it, X1 goes over (always), 5 rolls, X3 tags the roller, 3 comes over. |
| 6 1 passes to 3, X3 closes out, it's live. |
| 7 Progression - 5 picks and pops. |
| 8 1 passes to 5, X3 stunts while the ball is in the air, 5 passes to 3, X3 closes out, it's live. |
| 9 2)
Bigs 1-on-1, 5 is the attacker, X5 the defender.
a)
5 sets a middle ballscreen for 1, X5 matches 1's numbers as he comes off the screen, 5 pops. |
| 10 1 throws it back to 5, X5 closes out (it's the same for bigs), live, two dribbles. |
| 11 b)
5 sets a step-up screen, 1 comes off, X5 matches his numbers (so 1 can't turn the corner), 5 pops. |
| 12 1 passes to 5, X5 closes out. |
