Tryouts
Kris Treat - Shooting

Kris Treat

a) Flip drill

Players form a line on each side of the lane and shoot short shots exaggerating correct shooting form, holding the follow-through for a count or two longer than usual. Players should shoot five shots then rotate. Evaluate the quality of their form, especially hand position and release.

See Shooting - Nash block.

b) Fast-break layups (shown)

1 tosses the ball of the backboard, rebounds and makes an outlet pass to 2, who calls for the ball. 1 runs wide up the sideline then cuts to the basket at the hashmark, 2 dribbles up the middle, jump stops at the foul line and hits 1 for a layup. Check that the shooter handles the pass, keeps from traveling, and hits the shot. Also do shots from the left side.

See Fast break - Outlet and go.

c) V-cut pop off a chair

Shooting off a pass, using a chair or cone as a screen. The shooter starts on the baseline, cuts towards the screen, plants his inside foot, pops out (v-cuts), gets a pass and shoots. If you run motion offence, have the players flare cut then curl cut the next time.

Evaluate the quality of the cut, reception and square-up, shooting footwork and form. To get a 10, the cut, reception and shot should be fluid and all part of the same motion, without drifting to the side or fading away from the basket.

See Shooting - Lee Rose guards.

d) Jab and go off a chair

Use a chair or cone as a defender, the attacker starts in triple threat about two steps away, jab steps to one side then crosses over, cuts off the other side of the chair, takes two hard dribbles to create separation, and shoots a 15-18 foot shot.

Look for a good jab and go without traveling, maintaining control of the dribble, and going up and coming down in the same spot on the shot, without drifting. The dribble and shot should be fluid and part of the same motion.

e) Pass, relocate, 3-point shot

The shooter passes to coach then relocates away for a skip pass and 3-point shot. The shooter should have his hands and feet ready for the return pass. Look for the quality of the relocation cut, pass reception, shooting footwork and form, and range to hit the 3-point shot.

See Shooting - Duke transition.

f) Free throws

At each tryout (usually at the end) players shoot 10 free throws and report their percentages. Shoot in sets of two, usually with a coach at each basket to discourage cheating.

An overall percentage of 90% or more gets a 10, then lower the score by one point for each 5% range, e.g., 9 for 85-89.9%, 8 for 80-84.9%, etc.
