Tryouts
Kris Treat - Defence

sketch
1
Kris Treat

a) Slide the court (shown)

Start under the basket facing the court in a defensive stance, attack slide up to the foul line, slide laterally over to the right sideline, attack slide forward to halfcourt, slide laterally to the left sideline, retreat slide to the foul-line extended, slide laterally to the elbow, retreat slide to the baseline, then go to the end of the line. Look for speed, the player does not cross his feet or bring them together, and stays low bending at the knees instead of the waist.

b) Zig-zag

A ballhandler starts from the baseline and dribbles upcourt in a zig-zag pattern, the defender slides with the ballhandler no more than arm's-length away, trying to keep his head directly between the ball and the basket, control the ballhandler, and force him to change direction. Also use this to assess dribbling.

See Tryouts - Kris Treat dribbling, Defending - Zig-zag.

c) 1 on 1

An attacker has a ball at the top of the key, the defender is in an on-ball stance between him and the basket, the defender reaches out and touches the chest of the attacker who then attacks the basket with no more than 2 dribbles, play until there is a shot or turnover, the defender should box out the shooter on a shot and get the rebound. Rotate offence to defence to the end of the line.

d) 3 on 3

Set up groups of three and play a mini-tournament, give the teams basic rules but don't tell them that the drill will be used only to evaluate off-ball defence. Look for stance, communication, willingness and ability to help, quick recoveries after help, and general floor position.
