Tactics Passing into the low post
| 1 5 checks the defence over his inside shoulder, looks for a cutter or diagonal pass.
coachesclipboard.ca - 2 screens for 1, 3 spaces high and wide (45 degrees), 1 or 2 can cut to the basket, the other would space outside the arc on the foul line extended.
Kevin Pigott - if 2's defender stays with him, he upscreens for 1, who can curl off the screen or flare to the wing, 2 goes opposite.
Rick Majerus - when the ball is in the low post, fill the funnel lines in both wings for a pass; best feed is the in-out re-post.
Jeff Van Gundy - on a low post catch, the other post goes under the backboard, leaving the middle open.
Sebastien Roduit - a high post cuts to the other block.
Basketball Canada - the high post basket cuts. |
| 2 Dirk Bauermann - 2 runs an elbow or baseline cut and 1 replaces him, or 2 screens for 1, dives, and continues out the weakside.
Gordon Chiesa - 2 can fake middle, cut baseline for a drop pass and layup on the other side of the rim (rim is friend and ally); 5 re-posts on a pass back out ballside.
Morgan Wootten - 2 reads the direction his defender's back is facing, goes opposite.
Sebastien Roduit - 2 takes two steps towards the top, then cuts to the corner on 5's dribble.
Alto Garcia Reneses - 2 can go away from the ball in the middle of the court, to the corner near the baseline, or cut to the basket.
Roy Williams - 2 slashes opposite the way 5 turns, or screens away. |
| 3 Ian MacKinnon
Dive the high post out of a high-low situation.
If there are two weakside perimeter players, they should be baseline and 45 degrees.
If his defender doubles down, 2 should go away from where his defender turns - if X2 turns baseline, 2 fills high; if X2 turns middle, 2 fills low. |
| 4 If 1 is ballside and there is no weakside low post, 2 can Laker cut, cutting off 5 for a hand-off or fake hand-off, forcing X5 to hedge.
2 will go opposite his defender, so it could be either baseline or middle.
If 2 has a post match-up he could stay in the low post, otherwise he can clear out to the corner and 4 can dive.
Weakside 3 moves to 45 degrees, especially if 2 runs a Laker cut and fills baseline. |
| 5 Alternatively 2 can screen for 1 (or exchange), 4 dives, and 3 moves to 45. |
| 6 If 5 attacks the basket, 4 spaces as in dribble penetration from the perimeter.
(See penetration options. If 5 attacks middle, 4 steps off the lane, seals on the block, goes to the side of the backboard, or circles under the basket. If 5 attacks baseline, 4 seals or goes to the dots.)
Sebastien Roduit - if 5 attacks middle, 4 fades to the corner if he is a shooter, or curls under the basket and the weakside wing drifts to the corner (can't have two in a row along the baseline). If 5 attacks baseline there should be a player in the weakside corner and weakside wing, 4 goes up the middle of the lane.
Rick Majerus - when a big with the ball in the low post turns to the baseline, always fill the corners. |
| 7 Double down
Gordon Chiesa - 2 cuts to the corner, 1 fills behind, 4 dives to the dots, 3 fills the offside wing.
Sergio Scariolo - on a double team, the passer can cut to the corner.
Moncho Monsalve - when X2 turns around and goes to help, we must occupy the space he cannot see - attack the back of his neck.
Vincente Rodriguez - if 4 is not a shooter, 2 will cut behind X2 to the middle, 4 runs to the baseline below X4; if 4 is a shooter, 2 goes towards the ballside corner, 4 comes up to the high post, 1 and 3 go outside wide weakside to create space.
coachesclipboard.net - 5 kicks the ball out to an open player. |
| 8 Morgan Wootten - If 2 passes back to the point instead of into 5, he downscreens for 5, or gets a backscreen from 5. |
