Press breaks Hofstra
| 1 Tom Pecora FIBA Assist, issue 36 1) Blue 4) White to the side1) Blue Against a fullcourt man press. 4 inbounds, 1 and 2 stack, 3 and 5 are on the sidelines at halfcourt. 1 and 2 screen for each other and break hard opposite. 4 passes to 1 (foul-line extended) and steps inbounds. (Variation - 1 and 2 can stack and break) |
| 2 2 cuts hard to the middle of the floor for a pass then advances the ball upcourt with a pass to 3 or 5. See Press breaks - Bill Self 1-3-1 (4 runs wide opposite, 1 becomes he new trailer). |
| 3 Option 2
If 2 is not open in the middle, 1 reverses the ball to 4, 2 cuts hard straight back to the sideline, 4 passes to 2, 1 cuts to the middle for a pass from 2, then attacks with a pass to 3 or 5. |
| 4 Option 3
When 1 and 2 are fronted after making their cuts to get open, they walk their men to the baseline, reverse pivot and seal for an inbounds pass over the top.
|
| 5 Option 4
If 4 can't pass to 1 or 2, 3 cuts hard to the top of the key for a pass, 1 and 2 sprint up the sidelines. (Variation - 5 flashes middle instead of 3, with a slower or more cautious defender) |
| 2) Yellow
Also against a fullcourt man press.
4 inbounds, the other four players line up along the top of the key extended. 5 takes his man away then cuts hard back to the ball for a pass, 2 screens away for 1 on the catch, 1 comes off the screen for a pass from 5 and pushes the ball upcourt with a pass to 3.
|
| 7 Option 2
When 4 can run the baseline, he makes a hard ball fake then sprints along the baseline, 3 takes his man away then cuts back to the ball, 1 screens away for 2 on the inbounds pass, 2 cuts hard upcourt toward the sideline then 1 cuts up the middle for a pass from 3.
|
| 8 Option 3
When there is a defender on the inbounder and the other four players are all face-guarded, 4 calls a player's number, all players take one or two hard steps towards the ball, then the player whose number was called (here 2) sprints upcourt for a baseball pass.
|
| 3) White
Against a fullcourt zone press.
The set-up is the same as Blue. 1 and 2 screen for each other and break opposite, when 4 inbounds to 1 he sprints to the middle of the floor at halfcourt.
|
| 10 1 takes one or two dribbles, reverses the ball to 2 who passes to 4, who turns and passes to 5 at the top of key. 5 makes a bounce pass to 3.
Option 2
2 skip passes directly to 5 if 4 is denied.
|
| 11 Option 3
Use this when the defence will fall back into a 1-3-1.
1 reverses to 2, who advances the ball, 3 and 4 exchange positions.
|
| 12 As 2 crosses halfcourt he drives hard at 3 who spaces to the wing for a pass and shot.
|
| 13 Option 4
Instead of driving at 3, 2 passes to 4 who passes to 5 flashing to the ballside block.
|
| 4) White to the side
4 again sprints to the middle after inbounding to 1.
Option 1
When 1 reverses the ball to 2, 4 sprints to the ballside sideline for a pass, then passes to 5 at the top of the key.
Use this option when the defender guarding 4 in the middle does not follow him to the sideline.
|
| 15 Option 2
2 makes a hard ball fake to 4 on the sideline, then quickly reverses back to 1, who pushes the ball and passes to 5.
Use this option when the defender guarding 4 in the middle follows him to the sideline.
