Offence Petitgoue open-post
| 1 Jerry Petitgoue
Keys to winning are rebounding, getting to the foul line, and taking the ball to the rack. The open-post offence allows this (take your man to the basket anytime you can), as well as a delay game. There are also many backdoor opportunities.
Iowa
This is their delay game, and an offence against on-the-line pressure defence. On a pass from the top to the wing, 1 basket cuts hard and goes through, 3 cuts to the nail then backcuts if overplayed or otherwise pops out. 5 fills. |
| 2 On a pass from the wing to the top, 2 basket cuts to the same side, 4 fills.
Go backdoor on overplay, fill.
| 3 On a pass to the corner, 2 picks and rolls then comes out to the corner if there is no play, 4 holds the dribble then replaces 2 on the wing.
| Revolve
Revolve is the same as Iowa except that two cutters go through on a top-to-wing pass, the third cutter fills the top.
| 5 2 basket cuts on the wing-to-top pass, and would pick and roll on a pass to the corner.
| 6 5 and 4 go through on the pass to 1, 2 fills the top.
| Pick
Against a sagging defence. On a pass from the top to the wing, 1 screens away for 3, butt to the ball. 3 curls, 5 fills, 1 pops back to the ball (screeners come back where they started).
| 8 2 screens away on a pass to the corner then pops back to the ball.
| 9 Everyone stays on a pass out of the corner.
On a pass to the top, 2 screens down then pops back.
Cutters can go backdoor (reject a screen). If defenders switch, the guy coming back to the ball is open.
| 10 Dribble
From a 1-4 high set, 1 dribbles at 2, who backcuts and clears through. 4 cross-screens for 5 who curls.
| 11 5 backscreens for 4, then spread into the 5-out Pick series.
| Big Inside
2 and 3 screen down for the bigs.
| 13 1 passes to 5 and basket cuts, 4 and 2 fill.
| 14 On ball reversal to 2, 4 cuts hard up the middle, 5 fills the top for a pass, look for a high-low pass to 4 inside. There is no weakside help.
| 15 Lights Out
For a three-point shot. After the wings screen down for the bigs, 1 passes to 5, 4 and 1 stagger screen for 2 (who walks his man down), then spread. 1 comes back to the ball if his defender shows on 2.
| 16 On ball reversal to 1, 5 and 2 stagger screen for 3.
| 17 "Hustle" set
One-guard front. 2 is the best shooter. 1 dribbles toward 3, who v-cuts to get open for a pass. 2 overloads the corner, 5 walks up to backscreen, 1 passes to 3 and cuts using 5, who then pops out.
(Variation - 5 ballscreens for 3, see Arizona 1-4)
Men's Basketball HoopScoop - the Greatest - Petitgoue has called this play at least once every game for the past 37 years.
| 18 1 spreads to the wing, on ball reversal to 1, 4 backscreens for 3.
| 19 4 and 5 stagger screen for 2. If there is no shot, spread into 5-out Iowa.
| "Get Aggressive"
A two-guard set. 1 passes to 2 who passes to 4 then cuts using 5, who then turns and gets 1. 3 pops out top.
HoopScoop - Split the post - 1 and 4 are the two guards.
| 21 On ball reversal to 2, 1 backscreens for 4.
HoopScoop - 5 should follow the ball as it is reversed to take away help defence on the shuffle cut.
| 22 5 and 3 stagger screen for 1, then pop out into 5-out Pick.
| 23 "Move the Ball"
1 passes to 3 then cuts front or back using 5, who then pops out. 2 screens for 4 to pop out, then goes to the low post.
HoopScoop - Big Man Dunk - 4 starts in the trail spot, 3 (or 2) is on the left wing.
| 24 On ball reversal to 4, 3 runs the baseline using 1 and 2, then 1 backscreens for 5 and pops.
| 25 4 passes to 1 who dribbles to the wing, 5 looks to pin his man then backscreens for 4, spread into 5-out offence.
To drill the 5-out offence, run each series for 30 seconds against defence (timed rotation), then make 10 passes against defence.
