1-2-2 match-up situations 4-out 1-in
| 1 See 1-2-2 vs 2-1-2.
Three defenders cover the three low attackers, two defenders cover 1 and 4.
The 1-2-2 becomes almost a 2-3 zone, X2 or X3 will cover a low attacker, and X4 or X5 will guard post 5.
With X1 on the ball the zone has a 1-2-2 shape. Here the ball is brought up on the defensive right, so
- X1 takes the ball - X2 matches up with 4 - X4 has 2 - X3 has 3 (a low attacker) - X5 has 5.
Hoop Tactics - X5 takes and stays with 5. |
| 2 If 1 brings the ball up on the defensive left,
- X1 takes the ball - X2 has 2 (a low attacker) - X4 has 5 - X3 has 4 - X5 has 3. |
| 3 a)
X2 closes out on a pass to 2, X1 covers the high post.
See Pistons 1-2-2 - one defender on the ball, four close to the paint.
Trap option - X1 follows the pass to trap with X2, X3 takes away a return pass to 1, X5 rotates to cover the high post. |
| 4 X5 may be ballside if helping on the low post (e.g. if X4 is fronting or playing on the baseline side), then X3 may have to take a skip pass to 3.
X4 can help on a baseline drive.
See Defence - 3-2 Foster.
|
| 5 b)
X1 also covers the high post on a pass to 4.
|
| 6 Match-ups are the same.
Trapping option - X1 traps with X3, X2 takes away a return pass to 1, leave open a skip pass.
Hoop Tactics - X5 stays with 5, X4 would take 3.
|
| 7 On a pass to 3, X3 can deny a return pass or follow to trap with X5 (for a "red" trap, X1 takes away a return pass to 4, X2 rotates to cover the high post).
