Defence 1-2-2 (grey)
| 1 Grey is a 1-2-2 halfcourt press, used e.g. when the other team has a side-out in their backcourt.
Options
- Thumbs up - trap on the first dribble over halfcourt - Thumbs down - trap on the first penetrating pass made in the backcourt - Fist - regular quarter-court 1-2-2.
Thumbs-down option - trap the first pass even it is not a penetrating pass (e.g. guard to guard).
See Defences - 1-2-2 halfcourt press, 1-2-2, Scramble halfcourt, Tar Heels scramble, 1-3-1 Blackford. |
| 2 Defenders match up, on-the-line up-the-line to deter an initial pass. a) Thumbs up
Trap on the first dribble in the backcourt.
Here X3 traps with X1.
The obvious pass is to 2, X4 takes that away.
X2 anticipates a pass to 4, X5 denies the high post (leaving open a deep skip pass to 3). Variation - control blitz - make a great player pass, don't shoot gaps to deny. Use an attack blitz with a player who is not comfortable with the ball, shoot the gaps. |
| 3 On a pass to 2, X3 bumps X4 into the 1-2-2. Roy Williams - after trapping on the first dribble, they don't trap again. |
| 4 Or optionally trap again, X3 follows the pass to trap with X4.
See Defence - 1-2-2 halfcourt press.Jim Larranaga - on a pass to the wing out of the trap, Thumbs up becomes Thumbs down. Dean Smith - they will trap again on a pass up the sideline. |
| 5 The obvious pass is back to 1. |
| 6 |
| 7 b) Thumbs down
Trap on the first penetrating pass made in the backcourt.
X3 and X2 retreat as the ball is dribbled into the backcourt.
X1 follows the pass to 2 and traps with X3, the obvious pass is back to 1, X2 covers that, X5 covers the high post.
Herb Brown - 2T 3-2 zone - trap the first pass to the wing or corner, if 1 makes a corner pass, X3 and X4 would trap and X5 front a low post.
Tar Heels - don't allow a long pass across halfcourt.
See Defences - 1-2-2, Villanova 1-2-2 3/4-court (Halfcourt blitz). |
| 8 Trap again on a pass to the corner, X3 traps with X4.
X1 stays to take away the sideline, X5 drops to cover the low post, X2 drops to cover the high post (a "red" trap, leaving open a skip pass). Larranaga - if the other team continues to attack with a pass to the corner, trap again. Williams - they like to double-team again on a short pass to the corner or up the sideline. |
| 9 c) Fist
Defenders retreat to the regular 1-2-2 defence without trapping on the first dribble or pass (they can stunt and recover), but can optionally still trap if the ball goes to the corners or to a match-up.
Attackers are uncertain whether or when they will be trapped. |
