Offence
Flex

Also see Tubby Smith flex variations, and the Argentina 2003 offence.

Basic pattern

1 passes to 4, 2 rubs under or over 5's base (flex) screen. 1 downscreens for 5 then takes 2's place on the wing. 5 opens to the ball after screening then comes up off 1's screen.

1 steps out to the corner, 4 passes to 5, 3 rubs off 2's screen, 4 downscreens for 2, and 4 takes 3's place on the wing.

5 would then pass to 2, 1 cut off a flex screen by 3, and 5 downscreen for 3.

Entry options

a) 4 downscreens for 3 (see Dusan Ivkovic offence).

Variation - 4 ballscreens for 1 to exchange positions.

sketch
4
b) 5 sets up weakside, so that 3 flex cuts when 1 dribbles into position, avoiding the first pass across the top.

See Tubby Smith for this and other entries.

c) Argentina - 1 passes to 4, downscreens for 5, then goes to the ballside low post. 3 flex cuts off 1 when 4 passes to 5

Pass to the wing

a) 1 passes to 4 who passes to 3, 2 flex cuts and backscreens for 4.

See Tubby Smith, and Hubie Brown triangle offence.

Variations - 2 posts up or ballscreens.

sketch
7
b) Argentina - 4 follows his pass, ballscreens for 3, 2 backscreens for 4.

sketch
8
c) 1 passes to 2, 4 and 1 stagger screen for 3 then re-set the flex formation.

Hoop Tactics - 3 can backscreen for 4 on the pass to 2, who looks for the lob pass or 5 posting up.

See Tubby Smith flex.

Denials

4 is denied, cuts backdoor, 2 replaces.

See Tubby Smith flex.

Hoop Tactics

4 is denied, 2 breaks high for a pass from 1, 4 backcuts on the pass. 1 can follow his pass for a two-man game.

2 backcuts for a lob pass if overplayed at the high post.

Other options

- 5 moves across, flex screens for 2
- 2 backscreens for 4
- 4 downscreens for 2
- 1 skip passes to 2.

If defenders switch, screeners flash back towards the ball. Here low-post defender X2 steps out to bump or pick up flex cutter 3, so 3 fakes the flex cut and pushes 2 across to replace him ("touch and go"). 3 then cuts up off a downscreen from 5. 4 looks to hit 2 inside.

Option - 3 cuts off a double screen by 2 and 5.

Specials

a) Argentina - after downscreening for 4, 1 stays at the low post. 3 runs the baseline using screens from 2 and 1 (3 and 1 switch).

sketch

b) instead of downscreening for 2, 5 gets a backscreen from 2.
