"3" is a normal 1-2-2 zone, "31" applies a trap on the first pass when the ball is passed below the free-throw line extended.

X5 is the best rebounder and plays on the same side as the point guard. X4 and X5 have both feet in the lane, X1 and X2 have one foot inside.

Principles

- put constant pressure on the ball
- do not allow lay-ups
- always talk (e.g., ball, help)
- contest every shot
- don't foul the shooter
- all defenders must box out
- do not allow passes inside the defence, but allow passes around the perimeter
- keep hands high, not out
- guard the high and low post in front
- guards X1 and X2 take skip passes.

With the ball on the wing, X3 covers the ballside elbow area, and contests any attacker who makes a flash cut to this position. X5 fronts the low post, X4 slides towards the ball.

On a pass to the corner, X5 aggressively closes out, X3 fronts in the low post, X1 covers the ballside high post and wing position. X2 and X4 have their shoulders parallel to the baseline.

On a corner-to-wing skip pass, X2 closes out, X4 guards the ballside low post, X3 has the ballside high post (regular positions).

On a wing-to-corner skip pass, X2 takes the ball, X3 replaces X2 and guards any high post, X4 fronts the low post, X1 replaces X3, X5 slides inside the lane.

If an attacker at the top dribbles to the wing, X1 guards him aggressively and makes physical contact or else jumps in his path.

If an attacker in the corner dribbles out, X1 guards him aggressively, tries to keep him from leaving that area, making strong contact.
